To me, it is arguably Nikon’s best-ever midrange zoom, and only the Z 24-70mm f/2.8 gives it a run for its money, depending on your priorities. NIKON Z 7 + NIKKOR Z 24-120mm f/4 S @ 120mm, ISO 64, 1/160, f/8.0. That’s why I see myself recommending the Nikon Z 24-120mm f/4 S to a lot of photographers in the coming years.
The Nikkor Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S is a full-frame lens, and as such, the focal length printed on the lens is what you get. Using the 24-70mm lens in DX (crop) format mode, gives you an equivalent focal length of 36-105mm. The angle of view in the standard FX format is 84 degrees to 34 degrees. 24mm. 70mm. It gets really good reviews even though it looks a bit cheap. I've got the older 24-70 F mount 2.8 and while it's a great lens it's huge with the hood and FTZ. I'm tempted to swap it for the z24-70 F4 as it's smaller and should be better for video. Plus it would balance on my gimbal.
Nikon Nikkor Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S Pro Review - John Riley reviews the new Nikkor Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S Pro lens for full-frame Nikon Z mirrorless cameras.
The Z 24-120mm f/4 S has the highest levels of lateral CA around 24mm and 35mm. It dips as you zoom to about 70mm, then increases a bit at the long end of the zoom range. NIKON Z 7 + NIKKOR Z 24-120mm f/4 S @ 80mm, ISO 64, 1/30, f/8.0. At the absolute highest, the lateral CA on the Nikon Z 24-120mm f/4 S measures 1.76 pixels in our tests.

No, the 24-120mm f/4 S isn't the best performer at 120mm—the telephoto end is its weaker end—but it's also f/4 throughout its range, which is useful in keeping ISO down at times on the 45mp cameras (most of the examples shown in this review were at ISO 1600 or 3200 on a Z9). On DX cameras the liability of the 24-120mm f/4 S is obvious: no VR.
